Apocalypse Not

I grew up during the cold war. I was also raised in a fundamentalist Christian family. This combination provided strong values, community, and a crippling fear of Armageddon. I'm not sure exactly when I became convinced the World might end tomorrow, but it could have been around the time my mother told me, "The World might end tomorrow."

I was twelve.

Thanks, USA Today!

The new album is in stores March 25th. In today's issue, USA Today ran a teaser saying the first single Already Free "shimmers with pop savvy." -Elysa Gardner / USA Today

Top 20 Spiritual Pop Songs

My top twenty fav spiritual pop songs as of today:

20. King Of Pain / Police

Favorite Lines:

There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
There's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread

19. One Of Us / Joan Osborne

Favorite Lines:

One who initiates or counsels others in mystical matters

What's what is
we're gonna make a million
A million what?
A million what?

What's more,
we're to do it for the children
The children's what?
The children's what?

¿What lit up
the lamps and candles
till the sparks were
scattered in the sky

Is it ¿What we can feel
in the beat of an open heart?
or ¿What we leave
buried in a question mark?

¿What is kicking
at the bottom of a casket
I wanna save It
but I'm too afraid to touch It

KBCO / Already Free

It's official. Yesterday at about 4pm KBCO played my single Already Free as part of their New Music Monday. So it begins. First station in the World to play the single! It would be hard to overstate my excitement. I literally squeeled like a field mouse when I heard the news, and spent a good hour bounding around the house. Could there be any better way to start the week? The single and album went out to radio last week, and this news put a perma-grin on my face all day.

No More Either / Or

I sit on the roof at night and stare into the stars. Is that cliche', because billions of people have done the same over the last million years? Or maybe the momentum of all that focus makes the experience more powerful?

Tour Dates Coming Soon

I'm happy to say in the next few days I'll be posting confirmed concert dates for spring. I'll be with a full band for all shows, and we will be in these cities on the first leg of the tour in March:

Des Moines
Iowa City

I'm quite excited to be back on stage. More soon!

I Ate Some Glass

Yesterday I was helping my wife unload groceries. We dropped the bag with olive oil and pistachios. The glass bottle of olive oil hit the pavement and broke, soaking the pistachios. I love pistachios. AND olive oil. I knew we could not salvage the spilled oil, but I saw no reason to throw out those nuts.

The Focus

It's 3am. Can't sleep. I wouldn't say I have insomnia. Just went to bed at 10 and woke up at 3. Woke up after dreaming of Egypt. Thousands of years ago.

Carpenters Crush The... (insert your favorite band here)

It's Carpenters, by the way. Not "the" Carpenters. Just Carpenters. And yes, they thought about it. A LOT. Let's honor their choice. Carpenters. Maybe your 'fraidy cat band needs a definite article to pave the way for their moniker, but not Carpenters. Their name stands free, unqualified. It's that strong.

In the Press

We were blown away by Stuart’s pure genius. Finally a songwriter with something to say. We booked him on the show, calls started coming in “Who was that? Who was that you had on World Cafe?”
