Sex, God, Rock ’n Roll is a national TV series created and hosted by Stuart Davis. Season One was filmed in front of a live studio audience (no laugh track!) at Immersive Studios in Boulder, Colorado. The show blends Stu’s original sketches and monologues with news segments covering sexuality, spirituality, and the showbiz world.
Originally filmed in an hour-long format, Season One includes interviews with Zen master Junpo Roshi, Sera Beak, Michael Dowd, Tami Simon, and Ken Wilber, among others. Topics range from the alien abduction phenomena, entheogenic compounds, to polyamory.
Hoping to infuse more depth into entertainment and more entertainment into the depths, Davis filmed the entire first season without a network in place for broadcast. Bit of a gamble, as the show doesn't make fun of spirituality and sexuality, but has fun in them. Part of the inspiration in creating SGRR came from Davis' feeling -as a fan of comedy- there is a lot of irony and deconstruction out there, but not much sincerity and seeking. So, dirty sex jokes mingled with bits on Zen, and that bending / blending typifies the tone of the show. It would've been too much for most conventional executives, but-
Davis sent it to Marc Cuban, and... voila'. Shortly after completion, the show was picked up nationally by HDNet (later AXS TV), Cuban’s cable network.
For Season Two, SGRR gained Kandyse McClure (Battlestar Galactica, Hemlock Grove) and Mariann Gavelo (Casa de mi Padre, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia) as co-stars, and moved home base to Hollywood. Filmed at the legendary Henson Studios, Season Two highlights include appearances by Kermit the Frog and new recurring segments such as Rocktails and Sexy Word.
