Dharma Pop Records

The bastard child of Tori Amos and Suzuki Roshi?
Dharma Records is the Tao according to Davis, a bald lightening rod
out to start a karma pyre. The label is funded and operated by fans who do
whatever they can to make way for the synthesis of sex, death, and Godhead in
the Occident. Their idea of cool pop music seems impossibly ambitious:
Unfolding mind, body and Spirit in self, culture and nature with kick ass
songs. Dull as that sounds to pot-heads, this “integral pop” has the critics
chanting sutras.
“Without exaggeration, Stuart Davis is one of the most fascinating and
exceptional songwriters in modern music” -San Jose Metro
“We were blown away by Stuart’s pure genius. We booked him on the show,
calls started coming in, ‘Who was that guy you had on the World Cafe?’”
-Bruce Warren, Producer of The World Cafe Syndicated to 150
stations
“A rare genius. Whatever you do, don’t miss his work or his performances.”
-Ken Wilber
“Davis may be the best songwriter you’ve never heard of.”
-Des Moines Register
“Not since Bob Dylan burst through 30 years ago has Minnesota produced such
a confident and creative songwriter.”
-Minneapolis Star Tribune
“Davis is definitely not background music.”
-Performing Songwriter Magazine
Formed in 1999 by Stu and a crash of gurus disguised as investors, Dharma
Pop generates financing on a project-to-project basis by selling shares
to fans. Both Bright Apocalypse (1999) and Stuart Davis (2001) were funded
this way. In addition to the dough, some 150 supporters have stepped forward
to make a rock n’ roll Sangha of street teams. These “punk monks” bring
integral pop to the world, and the world to Stu shows. Postering, handing out
flyers, selling merchandise at shows, increasing Stu’s presence online,
bringing friends to shows, booking shows, getting Stuart CDs in record stores,
calling radio stations, and teaching parrots in pet shops to screech “Even The
Devil Is God!”- are all part of the love that is promotion.
Those interested in punk-monking can register online. As for investing, there are currently no shares available
for purchase in Post Apocalyptic Records, BUT a full length motion picture is
in development based on Stuart’s songs Swim, Dive, and Drown (Self Titled CD,
2001), and interested parties can contact Stuart about participating in the
project. Ahem, that means funding.
Would you like butter with that kundalini surge?
The film (working title “Fall Awake”) will feature Davis playing himself in the
lead role, and sports an all-Stu soundtrack. It’s the story of a singer who
falls through the ice playing pond hockey, and before being revived, has an
experience of unbounded awareness. The plot unfolds from there, exploring all
the messes that come with miracles, and packs enough sex, death, and God to
please all attention spans. Co-written with New York director Brian Vegtor,
this future Grammy-Oscar Sweeper will be ready for shooting in the winter of
2002.
